It's January 25th, the day I've been eagerly awaiting. The day my Oscar madness begins once again. The nominations were announced this morning and I've already got my list made and my plans brewing.
Happiness:
Go Winter's Bone. I was really hoping for a Best Actress nod for Jennifer Lawrence, but I was delighted to see John Hawkes (I heart Deadwood alumni!) get a Supporting nod as well, and it snuck in there for Best Picture!
I was relieved that Hailee Steinfeld didn't lose out on a nomination because people might have split their vote for her between Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. I would love to see her win.
Toy Story 3 picks up a Best Pic nomination.
Jeremy Renner nominated for The Town. A gorgeously done film that sorta got forgotten in the mix, but Renner was the best thing about it so it's nice to see him recognized.
I think Christian Bale might finally get his Oscar. Dude is apparently psycho, but he's a talented psycho and has many Oscar-worthy perfomances on his resume.
Sadness:
Tangled shut out of the Best Animated Film noms. Boo! Booooooo!
I'd have liked to see Ben Affleck get recognized for directing The Town. He made a fantastic film, and has a great visual style. I'm really impressed with him.
Befuddlement:
The Kids Are All Right gets Best Pic, Actress, and Screenplay nods? Blargh. I hated this movie and almost every insipid character in it. I spent two hours wanting to smack so many fictional people. Just awful. However, I have no beef with the Supporting Actor nod because Mark Ruffalo is awesome in everything, including this terrible film. The one bit of goodness I clung to.
Christopher Nolan subbed for Best Director. What? To make a film as complex and innovative as Inception with such a clear vision surely warrants a nomination, no? I guess not.
What did you all think of the noms? I know what Jen thought. "Where the crap is Leo's nomination for Inception?" I'm gonna be hearing about that.

I definitely am not up on all the movies by a long shot, but I was also happy about Hailee Steinfeld's nomination and I think she's got a good chance to win. And even though I shut my eyes through most of Black Swan I think Natalie Portman did an amazing job. Frankly if anyone but Anette Benning wins Best Actress I'll skip around the room.
The Kids Are All Right -- can we just ban that movie from the planet already? Did no one else see the same movie I saw? I completely agree with what you said, Al. I almost want to ask for an explanation about this Best Picture nom, but then again I don't really care.
Yay Winter's Bone! Yay Hailee Steinfeld (although it should have been a Best Actress) and Yay Geoffrey Rush! oh, and Yay How To Train Your Dragon. See it. It's really cute.
also, bascially boo to to all the things you booed. Where was Affleck in all this? how sad that he didn't get recognized.
Kristen - I agree about Portman. It took me a week or so to digest, but I definitely think that was a fantastic, horrific, performance.
Has anyone seen Buitiful or know where it could possibly be playing in the next month???
All I know is it goes into wide release January 28th. Javier's nomination could help it get into more theaters, but I imagine it will mostly be at art house theaters or huge theaters in large cities. My odds of seeing it before the awards are not great, unless it happens to be playing near you next weekend.
